What is diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)?

Understand what DEF does, how it differs from diesel fuel, and what to ask when arranging bulk supply for your fleet.

DEF Basics

DEF supports the exhaust treatment system

Diesel exhaust fluid is a mixture of purified water and technically pure urea. Vehicles equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) use it in the exhaust treatment process. DEF is stored separately from diesel fuel; it is not a product to pour into the fuel tank. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's filling instructions.

Choose a suitable product and protect its quality

Ask for the product specification and check the API certification mark. Keep DEF in suitable, clean storage and dispensing equipment. Contamination can affect quality, so follow the product supplier's storage instructions and avoid using containers that have held other fluids. The API consumer guidance linked below explains handling in more detail.

Turn a product requirement into a supply plan

When you request bulk DEF, include your receiving address, approximate consumption and current storage arrangement. Tell the supplier whether you need a bulk fill or packaged product. Ask which format is available and how replenishment would be arranged before choosing an order quantity.

DEF products and DEF delivery answer different questions

The product choice covers specification, packaging and intended equipment. Delivery planning covers the receiving location, quantity and schedule. Navillus Petroleum can discuss both. Include the products your fleet uses and your delivery requirements in one inquiry so our team can review them with you.
